The Department of Public Services (DPS) is the backbone of the City. This department works with street maintenance (patching and snow removal), storm sewers, street sweeping, bridge maintenance, traffic signs, sidewalks, sewer lines, water lines, tree maintenance and planting as well as many other duties.
The City has over 50 miles of paved streets. There is currently a street rebuilding program which allows the proceeds from 3.7 mils of street taxes to be spent on our major and local street systems. In addition, the City also receives money from the State to help maintain the streets which have been designated major and local streets.
The City Commission considers which streets are included in the paving program for the next year. Any citizens wishing to have their street considered for a paving program should write a letter or turn in a petition to the City Clerk. In this way, City Administration can take that information under consideration when making its recommendation to the City Commission. The decision is usually made during the months of January and February.
SIDEWALK INSTALLATIONS OR REPAIR
The City currently has a sidewalk repair and installation program which allows a property owner to request a repair to the sidewalk in front of their property. WATER AND SEWER PROBLEMS
If you are experiencing problems with your water or sewer lines or service, please contact (269) 273-1845. If the problem is an emergency and not during regular business hours, please call (269) 467-4195 and they will call someone in to service your problem.
However, if your water has been shut off for non-payment, you will need to call the Finance Department at (269) 273-1075, x110. The City does charge a turn on fee if the water has been shut off for non-payment or you need water turned on at a time other than during regular business hours.
WATER & SEWER LINE REPAIR
The City has a Water / Sewer Repair Program that may defray the cost of repairing the water or sewer line which runs from a house to the street. To find out about this program, please call the Finance Department at (269) 273-1075, x110.
GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM (GIS)
The Department of Public Services is also responsible for the City’s geographic information system (GIS). A GIS is a computer systems that creates, maintains, and analyzes geographic, or spatial, data and information in the form of maps. Visit the GIS page for more information.
COMPOST & RECYCLING
The City of Three Rivers compost drop off area at the Department of Public Services (1015 South Lincoln Avenue) is open all day every day for the convenience of our residents. If you have any questions, please call the Department of Public Services at (269) 273-1845.
If you wish to recycle, you may use the Waste Management’s Westside Recycling & Disposal Facility (aka – Westside Landfill or Westside RDF) drop off location at 14094 M-60 West on Saturday mornings, or you may hire a private firm to pick up your recyclables. Michiana Recycling and Disposal offers weekly curbside recycling for its trash customers and can be reached at 1-800-722-9710. Waste Management also offers curbside recycling and can be reached at 1-866-909-4458.
