The Department of Public Services (DPS) is the backbone of the City. This department works with street maintenance (patching and snow removal), storm sewers, street sweeping, bridge maintenance, traffic signs, sidewalks, sewer lines, water lines, tree maintenance and planting as well as many other duties.
The City has over 50 miles of paved streets. There is currently a street rebuilding program which allows the proceeds from 3.7 mils of street taxes to be spent on our major and local street systems. In addition, the City also receives money from the State to help maintain the streets which have been designated major and local streets.
The City Commission considers which streets are included in the paving program for the next year. Any citizens wishing to have their street considered for a paving program should write a letter or turn in a petition to the City Clerk. In this way, City Administration can take that information under consideration when making its recommendation to the City Commission. The decision is usually made during the months of January and February.
SIDEWALK INSTALLATIONS OR REPAIR
The City currently has a sidewalk repair and installation program which allows a property owner to request a repair to the sidewalk in front of their property. If a property owner has sidewalks that need repair, please contact Amy Roth at (269) 273-1845 to have your name and address placed on the list.
